Avoiding Contamination - Help Keep This Collection Clean!

Please take time to ensure each item placed in the Personal Electronics mailer is among our list of accepted items. Placing the wrong items in the mailer has significant human and environmental impacts.

If the mailer contains contamination, it is possible the entirety of its contents will not be able to be processed. Light bulbs, batteries, and heavily damaged electronics can also pose serious risks to our operators and partners. If you have any questions or doubts about whether an item can be included, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support team at HQ@wastenotcompost.com.

YOUR IMPACT

Every year, less than 20% of the nearly 50 million tonnes of e-waste produced is recycled. For every mailer of cords recycled with WasteNot, approximately 10 pounds of E-waste is diverted from the landfill, ensuring that the easily recyclable metals contained within them are actually recycled.

Who are you partnering with? What happens with the donations? 

WasteNot works with several local electronic recycling partners that wipe devices of all data, identify electronics that can be reused or refurbished, and then dismantle remaining electronics by hand to ensure safe recycling of their components. 

Who is eligible for this collection?

Currently, all residential WasteNot members who receive either weekly or bi-weekly compost collection in the Chicagoland area are eligible for this service. We are not able to collect Personal Electronics from non-members at this time. 

What is accepted in this collection? 

Check out our complete list of accepted items here. The full list is also printed on the mailer you receive from WasteNot. 

What do I need to do to prepare for collection?

Fill up your mailer with accepted items. Make sure not to overfill so the mailer can be sealed. Seal the mailer and place it on top of or near your bucket in your regular service location. Place the mailer out on any service date and our team will collect it along with your compost. 

While the mailer is water-resistant, we do request that on any service date when it is raining heavily you wait until your next service to place the mailer outside. This will help to avoid damaging any electronics that might have otherwise been recoverable. 

What if the collection fails due to missing bucket, inaccessible, etc?

The member can place the mailer out on their next service date if a pervious service fails. 

When will the mailer be collected?

The Personal Electronics mailer can be collected on any regularly scheduled service date. You do not need to schedule a pickup with the WasteNot team.  Simply place the full mailer out with your bucket on any service date.

Will my bucket also be serviced if I place the mailer our for collection?

Yes. 

What if all of my cords do not fit in the mailer?

To protect the integrity of the collected materials, overfilled bags, bags that are torn, or bags that are unsealed will not be collected. If your cords do not fit in the designated mailer, please order a second collection.

What if the bag is torn or otherwise damaged? 

To protect the integrity of the collected materials, overfilled bags, bags that are torn, or bags that are unsealed will not be collected. 

If your mailer is torn while filling, please contact HQ@wastenotcompost.com for a resolution. You may be asked to purchase another mailer if your mailer is torn.  

If your mailer is torn upon receipt (before you’ve filled it) please contact HQ@wastenotcompost.com for a new mailer. 

Can I sign up for a recurring subscription?

No, not currently. The Personal Electrnoics program is only available as a one-time add-on service. However, there is no limit on the number of collection mailers you may purchase.  

Can I order more than one mailer at a time? 

Yes there is no limit to the amount of collection mailers you may order at one time. If you do have more material than fits in one mailer, some of this material may be intended for our other newly launched collection, Cords & Cables. Be sure to check out the accepted items list for each of these distinct collections to make sure you are ordering the correct collection mailer.
